Our participation in the ETAP 2.0 assessment was a very satisfying experience for both our trainers and trainees at the King’s College Hospital, London. The ETAP 2.0 assessment provided an easy-to-use platform for an in-depth assessment of our training scheme. Every member of our training faculty participated actively in the assessment process, including departmental clinical director Prof. Paul Sidhu, lead trainers Dr. David Elias and Dr. Bhavna Batohi, and the rest of the trainers and trainees.
Each trainee filled in a questionnaire from the central ETAP 2.0 assessment board to ensure that all of their various perspectives were taken into account. With regard to the interview component of the ETAP 2.0 assessment, a four-hour online interview was conducted, and trainers and trainee representatives of all levels were interviewed individually. Dr. Priyan Tantrige, Dr. Devleen Mukherjee and Dr. Tina Fang, our trainee representatives at the time, took part. “For me, the interview was useful towards my forthcoming consultant interviews,” said Tantrige. “It provided me with insight into my own practice and the opportunities available at my centre in the context of what is available elsewhere.”
The rest of the application process was very smooth, thanks to a great team effort. One of our very talented consultant trainers, Dr. Giorgio Garzillo, worked together with Dr. Mukherjee to produce an excellent video for the assessment. The result was not only useful in showcasing the training facilities available to trainees at King’s, but also highly entertaining!
The ETAP 2.0 assessment enabled us to review our scheme against an internationally recognised set of standards, and it helped to identify our strengths, as well as areas for improvement. The Radiology Department at King’s College Hospital, London has considerable research capacity and reputation, as demonstrated by its publications, with 50–60 peer-reviewed papers published annually by the consultant members of the department. Further improvement was made following ETAP 2.0 assessment feedback to further involve even the very junior trainees in research activities from the beginning of their radiology careers, culminating in several publications authored by the junior trainees and continual inclusion of our radiology trainees in abstracts and presentations at both national and international scientific meetings in 2019.
Further fine-tuning of our training scheme was made following ETAP 2.0 feedback on our well-received, twice-daily consultant-led teaching tutorial programme. Dr. Pamela Allen, consultant lead for our teaching programme, incorporated additional radioprotection and MRI physics tutorials into our in-house teaching in 2019. Furthermore, the ETAP 2.0 assessment provided an added incentive to improve some of our facilities in 2019, such as the availability of computers and workstations.
Having completed the ETAP 2.0 assessment, we believe the process provides an excellent European-wide standard of assessment and accreditation, taking into account input from all trainees. ETAP 2.0 allowed us to be even more recognisable across European universities and hospitals. King’s College Hospital, London is already a well-established ESOR training centre, being the most popular destination in Europe (70% of all applicants apply to King’s).
“So far in 2019, King’s hosted approximately ten ESOR and other postgraduate scholars from all over Europe. These scholars represent the cream of the crop of future radiologists in their respective countries,” said Dr. Annamaria Deganello, coordinator of King’s ESOR scholarship programme.
The ‘platinum’ status that King’s received following the ETAP assessment further strengthens our scholarship scheme by giving wider visibility to the effectiveness of our training scheme. We now have a badge for the platinum award that may be posted on the hospital website. All our trainees and visiting scholars are encouraged to state that their training experience is in an EBR ETAP 2.0 platinum accredited training centre, with European and international recognition for the quality of training provided.
